                                                        Artist Statement

When looking at the portraits already in use on the RIT photography site, I see well-lit portraits that tell me nothing about the photography program of the student photographed. In reaction to these portraits, I created 3 portraits depicting three students in different lighting conditions and using items as symbols that can be interpreted in multiple ways. I also wanted the people being photographed to be anonymous, in order for the details and situations to become more important than the actual subjects.

In Your Head

Taken September 18, 2010 in Rochester, New York.

I was shooting in the city with Nick Talal (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nicholas-Talal-Photography/24654350888) when we encountered this man. After taking a few portraits, Nick asked him where he would want to wake up if he could wake up anywhere in the world. His response was "In your head."

2D

Taken September 13, 2010 in Rochester, New York.

This is an image that I'm using as a part of a 2D project, though it won't be used as a photo to be displayed. I really liked this image though, especially the forms and composition.

Sudden Acts of Violence

This is the start of a series I want to do called Sudden Acts of Violence. I want to create images that show mundane and relatively insignificant scenes that show that some sort of destruction or vandalism. I think I want to tie it in to how violence is tied into modern day society, but this is just the start of the project for now and hopefully I'll flesh it out more throughout the year.

The Destruction of Small Ideas

Taken September 11, 2010 on John Street, Rochester, New York.

This isn't a particularly amazing image but it struck a chord with me. I didn't shoot a lot over the summer but came up with tons of ideas for projects I wanted to shoot and one was called The Destruction of Small Ideas based off the album of the same name by 65daysofstatic. I was planning on incorporating the music in some way, likely my interpretation of the music using images. However, I think I'll be doing a piece in my 2D Design class using the album as a framework. I really like this image as a starting point for the piece visually. It also goes to show that no idea is too insignificant to jot down, as anything can serve as inspiration further down the line.
